Breast cancer treatment often involves mastectomy, a procedure that can significantly affect the body image of patients. The psychological impact of losing a breast can result in feelings of diminished femininity, lowered self-esteem, and body dissatisfaction. Oncology nurses play a key role in providing emotional and psychological support to patients before, during, and after mastectomy procedures. Their involvement in patient education, counseling, and post-surgical support can be pivotal in improving self-image and promoting psychological well-being.
Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri in Imo State is a leading healthcare institution offering cancer care, where oncology nurses are integral to supporting breast cancer survivors. This study aims to assess how the role of oncology nurses in providing counseling, education, and post-operative care influences the self-image of breast cancer survivors after mastectomy.
While mastectomy is a life-saving procedure, it often leads to a significant alteration in self-image for breast cancer patients. Nurses, who are typically the primary caregivers, have the potential to positively influence patients’ body image through effective counseling and support. However, there is insufficient research on the specific role of oncology nurses in enhancing post-mastectomy self-image. This study aims to explore the contributions of oncology nurses in improving the self-image of breast cancer survivors at FMC Owerri.
The study will focus on breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy at FMC Owerri, with an emphasis on the role of oncology nurses in improving self-image. Limitations include possible variations in individual responses to post-operative care and the subjective nature of self-reported body image.
