Background of the Study

Breast cancer treatment often involves mastectomy, a procedure that can significantly affect the body image of patients. The psychological impact of losing a breast can result in feelings of diminished femininity, lowered self-esteem, and body dissatisfaction. Oncology nurses play a key role in providing emotional and psychological support to patients before, during, and after mastectomy procedures. Their involvement in patient education, counseling, and post-surgical support can be pivotal in improving self-image and promoting psychological well-being.

Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri in Imo State is a leading healthcare institution offering cancer care, where oncology nurses are integral to supporting breast cancer survivors. This study aims to assess how the role of oncology nurses in providing counseling, education, and post-operative care influences the self-image of breast cancer survivors after mastectomy.

Statement of the Problem

While mastectomy is a life-saving procedure, it often leads to a significant alteration in self-image for breast cancer patients. Nurses, who are typically the primary caregivers, have the potential to positively influence patients’ body image through effective counseling and support. However, there is insufficient research on the specific role of oncology nurses in enhancing post-mastectomy self-image. This study aims to explore the contributions of oncology nurses in improving the self-image of breast cancer survivors at FMC Owerri.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of oncology nurses’ role in improving self-image in breast cancer survivors post-mastectomy.
  2. To explore the different interventions employed by oncology nurses to support post-mastectomy patients' psychological well-being.
  3. To assess the relationship between oncology nurses’ support and patients' self-reported body image satisfaction.

Research Questions

  1. How do oncology nurses’ interventions affect the self-image of breast cancer survivors post-mastectomy at FMC Owerri?
  2. What are the key interventions provided by oncology nurses that help improve self-image in breast cancer survivors?
  3. How do breast cancer survivors perceive the role of oncology nurses in their post-operative emotional and psychological recovery?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Oncology nurses’ interventions positively influence the self-image of breast cancer survivors post-mastectomy.
  2. Breast cancer survivors who receive post-operative emotional and psychological support report higher self-esteem and body satisfaction.
  3. Oncology nurses' counseling and education on self-care improve post-mastectomy self-image in breast cancer survivors.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on breast cancer survivors who have undergone mastectomy at FMC Owerri, with an emphasis on the role of oncology nurses in improving self-image. Limitations include possible variations in individual responses to post-operative care and the subjective nature of self-reported body image.

Definitions of Terms

  • Oncology Nurses: Nurses specializing in the care of cancer patients, providing education, emotional support, and symptom management.
  • Self-Image: An individual's perception of their physical appearance, which can be significantly impacted by cancer treatments such as mastectomy.
